Employment Web Site

If your goal is to find a job, or a better one than you have now -- the internet is the perfect place to find it.
Many people feel that placing their resume on the internet will  not be beneficial because they are looking for
a job in their local area only.  But let me  tell you from personal experience -- employees in your local area
use the internet to seek  out and find employees.  When they discover that you have spent the time to create
your  own web site, it will be "icing on the cake" in helping you get a job.  You also will be  one step ahead of
your competition. Besides, you will save a lot of money by putting up an employment web site.
To give you an example, I spent close to $200 printing and mailing resumes to advertisements
I answered in the local paper.  The $200 I spent resulted in only 11 interviews.
But when  I posted my resume on the internet and started marketing it, I obtained
36 interviews without  spending a dime. And all the jobs were from local employers.
To get started designing an employment web site for yourself, you have to make sure
your resume is up-to-date and contains detailed information about your employment background.
Simply type out your resume in your favorite word processing program  and copy and paste it later in your
new web page using Netscape. To decide on the total number of pages your employment web site will be,
you need to  determine how much information you are going to provide. Most employment web sites include
such details as:  (a) Two different resumes (if you have a varied background).(b) The ability to download your
resume in  Microsoft Word format, (c) A brief history of  who you are, your employment goals and other personal
information you care to provide,  (d) Samples of previous work you have done (if applicable.) For instance,
if you are a secretary or office worker, you have probably designed brochures or flyers at some point in your career.
Pick out your best work, scan it and use it as samples on your web site.
Business Web Site

If your goal is to make money on the internet, you will need to focus your energies on  designing a business web site.
A business web site can consist of any number of related  products and services.  Here are a few ideas to help you start thinking:
1.  Publish an informational product about any hobby you are involved in, a talent you have  or anything else you know something
about. The sky is the limit.
2.  Sell a real product like chocolate chip cookies, jams and jellies or handmade .  Perhaps you are a good seamstress and can
custom make clothing for people,  or if you work with wood, you could put together a kit and sell it to crafters.
3.  Sell a service like typing, desktop publishing, web design  .
To do it),  accounting or a tax service.  Perhaps you could even provide consulting services on a subject you are knowledgeable
about and offer your advice for a set fee. Of course there are many millions of other ideas, but whatever you do, don't start out a
business based solely upon affiliate programs.  An affiliate program is a type of business opportunity where you sign up with a
company to sell their products.  They ship the orders.   All you do is advertise and try to bring customers to them.  The reason I
advise against  this for new start-up companies is because you don't have enough experience in marketing  at this point and won't
have much traffic to your web site for a while.  Without a large  amount of visitors coming to your web
site, you cannot sell anything for these companies  and you'll lose interest in the
affiliate program. However, if you do decide to get involved with an affiliate program, select only the programs  that ENHANCE
your own web site theme.  For instance, if you sell informational products,  it is safe to join a Barnes and Noble or Amazon Books
affiliate program.  Their products are  similar to the same thing you are offering.

Summary
But whatever you do, before we start designing a web site for you, you must have some type  of idea in mind of what your web
site will be about.  When you have accomplished that,  simply take a piece of paper and write out a table of contents, which will
summarize the information you plan to include on your site.  If you already have a company brochure, you probably will have most
of the information you need already written for your web page.   But, if you don't, we'll have to spend some time putting your
thoughts together before actually sitting down to design your first web page.

How to Select a Web Host
When you start looking for a web host, you will have many hosting plans to choose from.  To help you understand what is meant
by all these different plans, let me explain the ones  that are most common for the majority of hosts:

Disk Space
All web hosts will provide you with a certain amount of disk space. My host provides from  5mg to 75mg of space for
your web pages.  How many web pages will fit into this space, you ask?  Most people won't answer this question because
some people make a web page  with lots and lots of graphics that goes on forever and ever. While other people design a web
page with just one graphic and a little bit of text. Because of the difference in size between  both types of web pages, it would be
impossible to say that a certain number of web pages  will fit in the 5mg, 10mg or 20mg of web space you purchase.  However,
as a general rule of  thumb, I estimate 10-15 web pages per megabyte of space.  (But don't hold me to that estimate.) Therefore,
if you purchase 5mg, you can probably get about 50-60 web pages in it without going  over.  My suggestion, if you are running a
small business, is to purchase at least 20mg of space  from your host.
I ran on .com for 2 years with this amount and I never exceeded the limit.

POP Email Accounts
When you purchase web space from a host, they normally supply you with extra email addresses  so you can send and receive
mail from your web site.  At my web site for instance, I can have up  to 75 email addresses but, of course, I don't use them all.
 What I do use are: webmaster@ptweb.com, ezine@ptweb.com, info@ptweb.com, and techsupport@ptweb.com.
Autoresponders
Auto responders are just like fax-on-demands.  When someone sends an email to your auto  responder, they will get an automatic
message back without you doing anything.  For instance, if you send an email message to if@ptweb.com,
you will get a message back  that tells you I received your email and will be responding shortly.  This helps to let people  know
I received their email and to wait for me to respond to it.  The auto responder message  is sent without my knowledge.
It is done automatically, just like a fax-on-demand and most  hosts provide them free of charge.
Detailed Web Statistics
It is important to make sure the host you select provides you with detailed web statistics.  This way, you can go into a master menu
and check to see how many visitors have come  to your web site, which pages they looked at and where the visitor came from.
If you are  running a business on the internet, this information is invaluable because it helps you to fine  tune your marketing strategies
which are detailed in my marketing book sold separately .
